I’ve lived the greater part of my life in three of this country’s snowiest cities, and in the valley that connects them. Severe winter weather has been a part of what the world had to offer. This picture — in front of my house last night, looking down the street — might easily have come from my childhood sixty or seventy years ago. What makes it remarkable today is, in that long interim, we’ve grown accustomed to much milder winters. For us, then, this is not a jolt of something new, it’s a reminder of something very old.
